SSAT scores: the formula, the scales and what our estimate means

On Middle and Upper, a right answer scores 1, a wrong answer loses 1/4 point and a blank scores 0. That raw score becomes a scaled score per section: Upper 500-800, with a total of 1500-2400, and Middle 440-710. Percentiles compare a student with first-time test takers of the same grade. Our practice result shows a scaled range marked estimated, unofficial, and no percentile.

The formula, and how to think about guessing

E3n's page on guessing and its Candidate Handbook (page 26) give the rule for Middle and Upper: plus 1 for a right answer, minus 1/4 for a wrong one, 0 for a blank. So four wrong answers cancel one right answer. The Elementary Level takes nothing off.

A wrong answer costs a quarter of a point; a blank costs nothing. If you can rule out two of the five choices, a guess can be worthwhile. That last sentence is the Handbook's rule of thumb. It also advises against random guessing. The arithmetic below is ours, and it assumes the choices left are equally likely:

Choices ruled outChance of being rightAverage points from a guess
None1 in 50: no gain
One1 in 4about +0.06
Two1 in 3about +0.17
Three1 in 2about +0.38

In practice a choice your child "ruled out" may be the right one, so be honest about it, and let the wrong answers on practice tests show whether the guesses are paying off.

The scales on a real report

These are from E3n's Interpretive Guide, where the 2022-23 edition carries the name of The Enrollment Management Association, now part of E3n.

LevelEach sectionTotal
Upper500-8001500-2400
Middle440-7101320-2130, our sum of the three sections

The total adds Verbal, Quantitative and Reading. Raw scores convert by statistical equating, so the same raw score can map to slightly different scaled scores on different forms. Reports also show a range around each score, because any test measures with some error. Percentiles run from 1 to 99 and compare a student with first-time test takers of the same grade, on Standard dates, in the US and Canada, over about three years.

E3n says paper scores typically arrive within 2 weeks, and SSAT at Home and Prometric scores the Wednesday after the testing week.

Average real scores by grade

This table is not an estimate of your child's score and is not a target. It is the mean scaled score that E3n's Interpretive Guide reports for first-time US and Canada test takers on Standard dates, August 2018 to July 2022. Grade means the grade the student was in when testing: 5-7 took Middle, 8-11 took Upper, and the two levels have different scales.

How our "Estimated, unofficial" range is made

Our practice forms are written by us and are not equated to the real SSAT. So the number on our result is an estimate, and it is labeled that way. The steps:

  1. We compute the formula raw score of each section, with the two Quantitative sections combined.
  2. E3n publishes estimate tables for its own Online Practice tests, which it marks as estimates and not actual scores. We take at most five points per section from them and join the points with straight lines. We do not copy the tables. They were built for E3n's tests, not ours, which is one more reason this is rough.
  3. We round to 10 and show a range of plus or minus 20, kept inside the section's scale. The 20 is E3n's example of the measurement error for Upper Level verbal; using it for every section and for Middle is our own assumption.
  4. The total is the sum of the three section estimates.
  5. A section with under 5 answers gets no estimate, and short tests get none at all.

We show no percentile: that would add a second guess on top of the first. The result that tells you what to do next is the one by section and skill.

Common questions

How is the SSAT scored?

On Middle and Upper: 1 point per right answer, minus a quarter of a point per wrong answer, 0 for a blank. The raw score of each section converts to a scaled score. The two Quantitative sections count as one score. Sources: E3n's Candidate Handbook and Interpretive Guide.

Is it better to guess or leave it blank on the SSAT?

With no idea, it makes no difference on average, and E3n advises against random guessing. If two of the five choices can be ruled out, a guess can be worthwhile. That is the Handbook's rule of thumb.

What is a good SSAT score?

We have no source for a cut-off, so we give none. Ask each school how it reads scores. For context, this page shows E3n's published means by grade.

Can your practice test give my child's percentile?

No. Our forms are not equated to the real test, so a percentile from them would stack one error on another. We show an estimated, unofficial scaled range instead.

How accurate is your estimated range?

We cannot give an accuracy figure, because we have no data comparing our forms with real scores. Treat it as a rough guide to where the practice result sits on the scale, and use the skill report to decide what to practice.

When do real SSAT scores come out?

E3n says paper scores typically arrive within 2 weeks; SSAT at Home and Prometric scores arrive the Wednesday after the testing week.
