Free SSAT Upper Level practice test: every scored section, timed

A free, full-length SSAT Upper Level practice test: 150 questions in four timed sections, 130 minutes of testing, scored by the SSAT's rule: plus 1 for a right answer, minus 1/4 for a wrong one, 0 for a blank. It leaves out the unscored writing sample and experimental section. At the end you see right, wrong and blank, the score by section and skill, and a scaled range marked estimated, unofficial.

Written by us in the published SSAT Upper Level format. Not the real test, and not affiliated with E3n or The Enrollment Management Association.

Practice Test 1 · 150 questions · four timed sections

Short test: 16 minutes

Both free: no email, no sign-up. Full test: each section's clock starts when the section opens and cannot be paused.

  • Quantitative 130:0025 questions
  • Reading40:0040 questions
  • Verbal30:0060 questions
  • Quantitative 230:0025 questions
  • Each of the four sections has its own clock. When the time for a section is up, the section ends and the next one begins.
  • A right answer scores 1 point, a wrong answer costs a quarter of a point, a blank costs nothing. If you can rule out two of the five choices, a guess can be worthwhile.
  • No calculator. Use scratch paper.
  • The real SSAT also has a 25-minute writing sample and an unscored experimental section. Neither is in the timed test; practice writing with the prompts in your dashboard.

What you see when the test ends

Sample report · SSAT Upper Level practice test

A sample result: 89 of 150 correct, with the score and the time of each section, and the score of each skill.

A sample report from a made-up run of the free test, scored by the same code as yours. Yours appears the moment the last section ends.

Right answers by section

Out of 25, 40, 60 and 25, plus how many questions your child reached before each clock ran out.

By skill inside each section

arithmetic and numbers; algebra; geometry; data, probability, sequences; reading: where the points were lost.

Right, wrong and blank

SSAT scoring (Candidate Handbook 2026-27): 1 point for each right answer, minus a quarter of a point for each wrong answer, 0 for a blank.

Estimated, unofficial

Estimated, unofficial scaled range (500-800 per section, total 1500-2400). Basis: points from E3n's own Estimated SSAT Scaled Scores table for the Upper Level, joined by straight lines, shown as +/- 20. Our forms are not equated to the real SSAT. How the score works.

Explanations

For the first 10 questions of each section, free; for every question with a plan.

E3n reports percentiles against first-time test takers of the same grade, and our practice forms are not equated to the real test, so we show right, wrong and blank, the formula raw score and an estimated scaled range, never a percentile.

The real SSAT also has a 25-minute writing sample that is not scored but goes to schools, and a 16-question experimental section that does not count. Our 150-question timed test leaves out both. Writing is practiced apart, with prompts and a self-check list in the dashboard of SSAT Practice Tests; we do not grade it.

What is on our SSAT Upper practice test

The same sections, counts and clocks as the real test. Inside each section the mix of skills follows the published blueprint where there is one, and is our own split inside the published ranges where there is not.

Questions about the free SSAT Upper practice test

What is the Upper Level score range?

On the real test each section is reported from 500 to 800 and the total from 1500 to 2400 (E3n's Interpretive Guide). Our result shows a range on that scale marked estimated, unofficial, because our forms are not equated to the real test.

Should my child answer every question?

No. A blank costs nothing and a wrong answer costs a quarter of a point. A blind guess gains nothing on average. If two of the five choices can be ruled out, a guess can be worthwhile, which is the rule of thumb in E3n's Candidate Handbook.

Is this the real SSAT?

No. It is a practice test written by us in the published SSAT Upper Level format: the same sections, the same number of questions and the same time for each section. The real test is given by the test organization and your school.

Is this SSAT Upper Level practice test really free?

Yes. The whole test, all four sections, with the result by section and skill and the explanations for the first 10 questions of each section. No email and no sign-up.

Does my child have to take all four sections in one sitting?

Each section runs on its own clock. Inside a section the clock never stops: a refresh or a closed tab does not pause it. Between sections the clock is stopped, so your child can take a break, or stop for the day and start the next section later; the answers so far are saved on that device. Plan about 130 minutes of testing.

Can my child skip questions and come back?

Inside a section, yes: our test lets your child skip a question and come back to it before that section's clock runs out. Time left in one section does not carry over to the next.

Is there a penalty for guessing?

Yes, as on the real test: a right answer scores 1 point, a wrong answer costs a quarter of a point and a blank costs nothing. We show right, wrong and blank and the formula raw score.

Does the practice test include the writing section?

The real SSAT also has a 25-minute writing sample that is not scored but goes to schools, and a 16-question experimental section that does not count. Our 150-question timed test leaves out both. Writing is practiced apart, with prompts and a self-check list in the dashboard of SSAT Practice Tests; we do not grade it.

Why an estimated range and no percentile?

Our forms are not equated to the real test, so we cannot say where your child would rank. We show an estimated scaled range, marked unofficial, from points the test organization publishes; no percentile.

About the paid plan

What do I get for $69?

SSAT Practice Tests ($69) opens all eight of our full timed practice tests, the free ones included (SSAT Middle: four; SSAT Upper: four), with an explanation for every question, the result report by section and by skill after each test, the mistake notebook and writing prompts with a self-check list.

Does one purchase cover every SSAT level?

Yes. SSAT Practice Tests opens every SSAT level we have, for one student and 12 months.

How fast do we get access?

The moment the payment goes through. The next page has the button to your dashboard, and we email a sign-in link. There is no password: on another device you enter the email you paid with and we send a 6‑digit code.

Is it a subscription?

No. You pay once and keep access for 12 months. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Write to [email protected] within 14 days of purchase and we refund the full price, no reason needed, as long as no more than one paid test has been started. If something is broken on our side, tell us at any time: we fix it, or refund you in full if we cannot.

Who charges my card?

Payment is processed by Creem, our merchant of record; we never see your card number.

Is the purchase for one child?

Yes. Access is for one student. Brothers and sisters each need their own purchase, so each has their own results and mistake notebook.
