Free ISEE practice test: choose your level by grade

The real ISEE has 127 questions at Lower Level and 160 at Middle and Upper, in four timed sections, plus a 30-minute essay that is not scored. Our full tests keep all 127 or 160 questions on the real clocks: one free and three paid per level. The real test leaves 17 or 21 of its questions unscored and does not say which, so on ours every question counts. E3n, which runs the ISEE, also gives its own free online sample test and a free PDF with a practice test; ours comes with a report by section and skill and plain explanations.

  • ISEE Lower Level: 127 questions in four timed sections, 110 minutes
  • ISEE Middle Level: 160 questions in four timed sections, 130 minutes
  • ISEE Upper Level: 160 questions in four timed sections, 130 minutes

What a free ISEE practice test gives you

The format, start to finish

All the questions of the level and every section on its own clock, in the order of the real test, so your child knows what the pace feels like.

A score for each section and skill

Right answers in every section, and inside each section by skill, with where the time went.

Explanations you can read together

Plain explanations for the first 10 questions of each section, free. With a plan, every question.

Full tests also show an estimated, unofficial scaled range for each section, made from figures E3n publishes for its own practice test. No percentile and no stanine: our forms are not equated to the real test, so such a number would be invented. The quick tests show raw scores only.

Questions about ISEE practice

Which ISEE level should my child take?

Go by the grade your child is applying to, not the grade they are in now: grades 5-6 take the Lower Level, grades 7-8 the Middle Level, grades 9-12 the Upper Level. So a current 8th grader applying to 9th grade takes the Upper Level.

Are there other free ISEE practice tests?

Yes. E3n gives its own free online sample test for each level and a free What to Expect PDF with a full paper practice test. Start with them if you like; they are the test organization's own practice. Ours is an online full test with a report by section and skill and explanations for the first 10 questions of each section; three more full tests per level and every explanation come with the paid plan.

Why does your test count all 160 questions when the real ISEE scores 139?

On the real test 21 of the 160 questions at Middle and Upper (17 of 127 at Lower) are unscored, and students cannot tell which they are. If we removed them and kept the same clocks, the pace would be easier than on test day. So we keep every question and every clock, and all of them count toward the raw score. For the estimated range only, we scale the raw score down to the real number of scored questions.

Will I see my child's ISEE percentile or stanine?

Not from our tests. We show right answers by section and skill and an estimated, unofficial scaled range for each section of a full test. The real percentile compares your child with applicants to the same grade over the past three years, and E3n does not publish those tables.

Do schools take the ISEE or the SSAT?

E3n says many schools accept both and some regions offer only one. Check with each school on your list before you register.

What do I get for $69?

ISEE Practice Tests ($69) opens all 12 of our full timed practice tests, the free ones included (ISEE Lower: four; ISEE Middle: four; ISEE Upper: four), with an explanation for every question, the result report by section and by skill after each test, the mistake notebook and writing prompts with a self-check list.

Does one purchase cover every ISEE level?

Yes. ISEE Practice Tests opens every ISEE level we have, for one student and 12 months.

How fast do we get access?

The moment the payment goes through. The next page has the button to your dashboard, and we email a sign-in link. There is no password: on another device you enter the email you paid with and we send a 6‑digit code.

Is it a subscription?

No. You pay once and keep access for 12 months. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Write to [email protected] within 14 days of purchase and we refund the full price, no reason needed, as long as no more than one paid test has been started. If something is broken on our side, tell us at any time: we fix it, or refund you in full if we cannot.

Who charges my card?

Payment is processed by Creem, our merchant of record; we never see your card number.

Is the purchase for one child?

Yes. Access is for one student. Brothers and sisters each need their own purchase, so each has their own results and mistake notebook.
