SSAT Quantitative: what the math covers and how to practice
The SSAT has two Quantitative sections on Middle and Upper, 25 questions and 30 minutes each, with no calculator and five answer choices. They combine into one score from 50 questions. The topics run from arithmetic and algebra to geometry, data and probability; coordinate geometry and slope are Upper Level only.

The topics E3n lists
From E3n's Interpretive Guide, shared by both levels unless noted. No shares are published. See also E3n's Upper and Middle pages.
- Numbers and arithmetic: word problems including percent and ratio, the four operations, estimation, rational numbers, exponents, absolute value.
- Algebra and patterns: algebraic word problems, equations of lines, sequences and series, patterns.
- Geometry: area and circumference of a circle; area and perimeter of polygons; volume of a cube, cylinder and box; the Pythagorean theorem; right, isosceles and equilateral triangles; parallel and perpendicular lines. Upper only: coordinate geometry and slope.
- Data: tables and graphs, trends and inferences, frequencies, probability.
Rules that matter
- No calculator (E3n), so practice by hand.
- Scratch work on paper tests goes in the blank space of the test book (E3n).
- The two sections are not next to each other: Reading and Verbal come between them, with a break.
- Wrong answers cost a quarter of a point (E3n). By our arithmetic each section gives 72 seconds a question, which leaves time to check an answer.
How to work a question
- Write something down. A small sketch or equation prevents most careless slips.
- Estimate first. A rough size can rule out choices at once, which also decides whether a guess is worth making.
- Try the choices when setting up an equation is slow.
- Check units and what was asked. Wrong choices often come from common errors, such as answering for the wrong quantity.
Try four
These are original questions in the Upper Level format, one each from our four practice groups.

How many ounces are in 4 pounds 15 ounces?
- 64 ounces
- 19 ounces
- 55 ounces
- 95 ounces
- 79 ounces
Answer: E. Each pound has 16 ounces. 4 × 16 = 64, and adding 15 more ounces gives 79. Answering 55 ounces comes from using 10 as the number of ounces in a pound.

y varies directly with x. When x = 6, y = 12. What is y when x = 5?
- 7
- 11
- 5
- 10
- 60
Answer: D. Since y varies directly with x, y = 2x (because 12 ÷ 6 = 2). When x = 5, y = 2 × 5 = 10. Answering 7 comes from adding the constant instead of multiplying.

A rectangular yard is 17 inches long and 13 inches wide. A square with sides of 6 inches is cut from one corner. What is the area of the remaining shape?
- 36 square inches
- 185 square inches
- 215 square inches
- 221 square inches
- 257 square inches
Answer: B. The whole rectangle has area 17 × 13 = 221. The square has area 6 × 6 = 36. The remaining area is 221 − 36 = 185 square inches.

The table shows the scores of a group of students on a short quiz. What is the mean score?
- 1
- 2.5
- 4.5
- 11.25
- 45
Answer: C. Multiply each score by its frequency and add: 1×4 + 5×2 + 7×3 + 10×1 = 45. There are 10 students, so the mean is 45 ÷ 10 = 4.5. Answering 1 comes from giving the most common score.
Practice on the clock
Our full test has both Quantitative sections on their own clocks, written by us, and the result gives one combined estimated, unofficial range and a report by skill.

Choose your level and startCommon questions
Is a calculator allowed on the SSAT math sections?
No. E3n does not allow calculators.
How many math questions are on the SSAT?
50 on Middle and Upper: two sections of 25 questions, 30 minutes each, combined into one quantitative score.
What is the most common math topic?
E3n does not publish the share of each area. The split of topics on our practice forms is our own choice, so please do not read it as the real test's split.
What is the difference between Middle and Upper math?
E3n's Interpretive Guide gives the two levels one shared list of areas and adds coordinate geometry and slope for Upper.
Should my child guess on math?
Only when two of the five choices can be ruled out, which is the rule of thumb in E3n's Candidate Handbook. A wrong answer costs a quarter of a point and a blank costs nothing.
